GARBH-Ini (Inter-disciplinary Group for Advanced Research on BirtH outcomes) Mission was launched in 2015 as an inter-institutional and interdisciplinary programme with an aim of acquiring deep fundamental knowledge about preterm birth and to use this knowledge to find efficient and sustainable solutions towards reducing the associated mortality and morbidity by promoting Maternal and Child Health, and develop prediction tools for pre-term birth.

Mission programme on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) launched by the department in 2018-19 financial year with the vision to develop indigenous and cost-effective therapies against AMR; categorization of AMR-specific pathogen priority list of India; establishment of Bio-repository for AMR-specific pathogens; and development of rapid and cost-effective diagnostic kits to identify AMR-specific pathogens.

Development of Bio-fortified and Protein-Rich wheat: contributing to POSHAN Abhiyan by addressing the issue of micronutrient malnutrition induced morbidity and mortality in the developing countries. More than half of the world’s population suffers from iron and zinc deficiency popularly called as hidden hunger. Department of Biotechnology is currently focusing on the enhancement of micronutrient content (iron and folate) and their bioavailability in wheat and rice.
